How the Midlands Reading Consortium is helping students build a brighter future
Did you know that 35% of children in our community enter fourth grade not reading on grade level? These students are four times less likely to graduate on time-a heartbreaking statistic with lifelong consequences. But it doesn't have to be this way.
That's where the Midlands Reading Consortium (MRC) steps in. Powered by United Way of the Midlands, MRC gives students the tools and support they need to succeed: safe learning spaces, dedicated mentors, access to books, and fun summer programs that keep kids learning even when school's out.
MRC is on a mission to get more kids reading on grade level by the start of fourth grade. We do this by recruiting and training community volunteers to read one-on-one with students throughout the school year. These personalized sessions help children grow in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.
Today, MRC serves students in Richland, Lexington, Fairfield, Orangeburg, and Newberry counties-and we're growing!
But we're not stopping at literacy.
In 2021, MRC expanded to include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities because just like reading, students in our region are falling behind in science and math. By fostering curiosity and building confidence, our STEM programming helps students see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and innovators.
MRC now offers five unique volunteer opportunities, including:
-
One-on-one reading sessions
-
Guest reading
-
Summer reading camp support
-
Book donations
-
STEM-focused volunteer roles
No teaching experience? No problem. All you need is a positive attitude and a heart for helping kids grow.
"What a difference this program makes," says Richland County librarian and MRC volunteer Heather McCue. "It's not just about reading. It's about connection. It's about planting seeds of confidence."
Want to help but don't have time to volunteer this year? You can still make a difference. Consider making a gift to United Way and indicating "MRC" in your donation. Every dollar helps us provide more books, more mentors, and more opportunities to learn.
Together, we can help every child fall in love with learning-one book, one volunteer, and one smile at a time.
