Purpose: These dedicated tax preparers donate their time to make sure those with limited incomes are able to complete tax returns in a timely fashion, enabling them to receive proper tax credits and refunds. Without volunteers providing this tax preparation service, many low income families would not be able to afford to have their taxes done due to the up-front expense of paying an accountant.
Responsibilities:
- Provide basic tax return preparation to all taxpayers using electronic filing software
- Interview clients to fully understand taxpayer’s tax situation to ensure the correct tax law is applied and all allowable credits are claimed. Answer tax-related questions
- Maintain confidentiality of taxpayer information
- Promote community resources
- Contact the site coordinator or advanced preparers for assistance when necessary
Requirements:
- Complete basic tax law training (see training section below) and successfully pass the IRS certification test
- Read all communications for updates on tax requirements or procedural changes
- Respect client privacy
- Ability to work as a volunteer at least one shift per week (2-4 hours) mid-January through mid-April
- Sites are open daytime, evening, and weekends. Shift hours vary by location
- Give 24-hour cancellation notice when unable to volunteer at your site
Qualifications:
- Strong verbal and communication skills
- Comfortable with a wide range of people
- Basic computer skills for entering tax information (Tax software training will be provided)
- Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision
- Commitment to strengthening families by increasing self-sufficiency
- Basic tax knowledge is a plus, but not required
Training: Basic tax training and certification are provided. Preparers can attend classroom training, or self-study through online training guide. Certification can be obtained at the basic, or advanced level. A preparer can only prepare returns that are within the scope of the level of certification he/she has.
