Who We Are

Able SC is a disability-led organization seeking transformational changes in systems, communities, and individuals. We practice equity, disability justice and representation, and true inclusion through consumer-driven independence and disability pride.

Mission: We are an organization of people with disabilities leading the charge to:

  • Equip people with disabilities with tools to foster pride and to direct their own lives
  • Educate the community to challenge stereotypes and eliminate barriers
  • and Advocate for access, equity, and inclusion at the individual, local, state, and national level.

Vision: A South Carolina that is a national model of equity and inclusion for all people with disabilities.

What We Do

Able SC offers a variety of services and programs that empower people with disabilities to reach their independence.

Information + Referral

Able SC accumulates and maintains invaluable information on all resources in each of the communities we serve. We can help individuals and their families connect with the right internal and external resources for a variety of needs.

Independent Living Skills

We offer a broad curriculum in activities and skills training for daily life, safety and wellbeing, customized to meet individual needs. Independent living specialists work one-on-one to create individual goals for independence and road maps for achieving them. Some examples include:

  • Self-determination and advocacy
  • Communication skills
  • Employment
  • Household management
  • Budgeting

Peer Support

Peer Supporters serve as inspiration and role models, as only someone with personal experience with disabilities can do. They share life experience and bring new ideas and information to facilitate independence. They work one-on-one, in small groups and do regular monthly Peer Support Groups for those interested—both on site and online.

Advocacy

Able SC assists individuals with advocacy by providing consumers with the necessary community support. Able SC is also involved in activities to make changes in the community so that people with disabilities can live independently.

Youth Services

Able SC provides services to advocate on behalf of students with disabilities to get them the education they need in the least restrictive environment. We give high school students with disabilities the specific skills they need to plan for their future, like identifying goals and the steps required to reach them.

Our way is to provide all the information and support individuals need to make informed decisions about their independent living/disability needs. Our philosophy of self-determination means consumers direct their case and are assisted by either Independent Living Specialists or Peer Supporters.
