Who We Are
Providing opportunities for adults over 50 to remain physically fit, socially engaged, intellectually stimulated and independent.
The Lourie Center is a not-for-profit, membership-based recreation center for adults ages 50 and up with a vibrant and growing membership. We are centrally located in downtown Columbia and offer up-to-date physical fitness, cultural, and educational programs for seniors on a daily basis.
The Lourie Center opened its doors in 1995 as the Capital Senior Advocacy Center, inspired by a group of Midlands residents whose vision was to provide a focal point for senior activities in the Columbia area for the growing senior population.
In 2015, the center was designated an accredited "Center of Excellence" by the National Institute of Senior Centers and remains one of only two such accredited centers in South Carolina.
What We Do
Programs feature health/wellness, fitness, cultural, and educational opportunities for older adults. We maintain a fully equipped gym, circuit training equipment, a multitude of professionally-led fitness classes (for all skill levels) from Yoga to Tai Chi to Aerobics to Pilates and MORE!
Cultural and educational classes include art, craft, language, and lectures. We offer something for just about everyone. Many of our events are open to the public.
Our programs are designed to meet the goal and objective of our mission: providing opportunities for adults over 50 to remain physically fit, socially engaged, intellectually stimulated, and independent.
There are always new and exciting special events going on at the Lourie Center.
Meeting and Event space rental - Our recently renovated facility offers over 18,000 square feet of space, providing the community with extraordinary venue for public and private events. Let us host your meeting, conference, or social event! Our classrooms and special event ballrooms are available for rental to organizations at affordable rates. We can accommodate groups from 20 to 350 people.
