Edisto Habitat for Humanity

Who We Are

For more than 30 years, Edisto Habitat for Humanity has worked with families, volunteers, local businesses, community partners, and donors to ensure that more people in Orangeburg County and surrounding areas can live in affordable, safe, and healthy homes.

We believe that affordable homeownership is a transformative force that creates the conditions for families to break free from stress and fear, fostering stability and confidence. When a home becomes a nurturing environment for health and safety, families can truly thrive. Homeownership not only allows families to save for the future and invest in educational opportunities but also opens doors to better job opportunities and long-term career growth, instilling hope and optimism.

What We Do

We partner with volunteers, donors, local businesses, corporations, sponsors, partner organizations, in-kind donors, educational institutions, foundations, and grant providers to build the capacity to address the substandard housing conditions that many people in our community face. Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Edisto Habitat builds homes with partner families needing simple, decent housing. We offer many services to bring stability to our community through the following programs:

Homeownership Program

Our Homeownership Program is designed to be accessible to qualified low- to moderate-income individuals and families who do not qualify for a conventional loan. Habitat homes are sold to families at no profit and financed with affordable, no-interest loans. We believe that affordable housing plays a critical role in strong, stable communities.

Financial Stability Program

As part of our Financial Stability Program, we offer financial education opportunities for our local community and family partners. We believe that financial education lays a stronger foundation for long-term personal success and helps alleviate barriers to creating generational wealth. Our community classes cover topics such as financial life skills, budgeting and credit workshops, retirement planning, and asset and family protection.

Edisto Habitat’s Homestore

The Edisto Habitat Homestore is a resale retail store that accepts and resells donated new and gently used home improvement items, furniture, appliances, and building materials. The Homestore's mission is to generate income and reinvest it in Edisto Habitat for Humanity's goal of ensuring everyone has a safe place to live and succeed through shelter.  In addition, and in line with our financial stability program, the Homestore provides opportunities to introduce people to workplace skills. Working with partner organizations, Job Corps and Goodwill, we help to provide employment opportunities and work/life skills at The Homestore for their clients and programs.

Brush with Kindness Ramp Program

The Brush with Kindness Ramp/Repair Program is designed to ensure that our residents can safely access their homes while also supporting our Aging in Place program, which aims to keep older adults in their homes for as long as possible, thereby decreasing the need for new housing.

Disaster Awareness, Preparedness & Response

We partner with local, state, and federal organizations to stay ahead of dangerous weather and disasters, inform the community, provide disaster preparedness plans, and help restore homes after disasters.

Advocacy Work

We advocate at the local, state, and federal levels to raise awareness of the critical housing shortage and champion policies and partnerships that create opportunity, economic mobility, and stronger, more resilient communities.
