The Alston Wilkes Society (AWS) is a non-profit organization committed to serving the community's most vulnerable populations. In 1962, AWS's original mission was to provide rehabilitative services to individuals who were formerly incarcerated. Since then, the organization has expanded its services to include veterans, at-risk youth, individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. The project for volunteer week is a landscaping project at the youth home entitled, "How Does Your Garden Grow?" The project is two-fold with the primary goal of beautifying the grounds by clearing the flower beds and planting flowers. The second part of the project is to build a vegetable box for the youth, to provide a hands-on learning experience from planting and growing vegetables. Materials needed include, lumber, nails, flowers, vegetable seeds, soil for two flower beds and the vegetable box, weed killer. Also needed are gloves, rakes, small hand-held shovels, and hoes.
